‘Top employer’ Lidl Northern Ireland extends enhanced paid leave policy to offer all staff paid time off for IVF cycles

Lidl Northern Ireland is enhancing its industry-leading benefits package by offering enhanced fertility support including paid time off to any of its 1,300 employees undergoing IVF, regardless of length of service. The new policy will see the retailer offer two days’ paid leave per IVF cycle, which is unlimited in the number of IVF cycles employees will be supported through, as well as support for staff undergoing egg freezing.

In the UK, more than 3.5 million people experience a fertility challenge and in Northern Ireland, infertility affects around 9-15% of couples.

The number of people undergoing IVF is also rising – in 2019, IVF birth rates were three times higher than in 1991 – and the number of patients aged over 40 more than doubled in this time, accounting for 21% of all IVF patients.

Despite the rising incidence of IVF treatment, financial support is decreasing. In Northern Ireland, this fell from 50% of all cycles being funded to 32% by 2019. According to Fertility Network UK, 90% of IVF patients say they have suffered depression due to infertility.

As a family retailer, Lidl Northern Ireland aims to encourage a national conversation to help destigmatise isolating and traumatic fertility challenges which are lived by so many people in Northern Ireland every day. The retailer’s new Fertility Paid Leave Policy is part of a relaunch of its industry-leading benefits package which seeks to support staff throughout all stages of their lives.

08.03.2022

Fratelli, the popular ristorante, pizzeria and bar located in Belfast city centre, is reopening on Friday 25 March to reveal an all-new authentic Italian menu and a luxurious refurbished interior.

In the heart of Belfast’s Great Victoria Street opposite the Europa Hotel and iconic Grand Opera House, Fratelli – Italian for ‘brothers’ – has been popular for city shoppers, visitors and theatregoers for over seven years with its family-friendly, authentic Italian dining experience.

Now, for 2022, this spacious, split-level restaurant located in one of the city’s busiest areas is back with a brand-new vibe.

After a significant £250,000 investment, the revamped restaurant has been fully transformed with new tiled and wooden floors, fresh new seating and textiles.

Fratelli’s spacious outdoor terrace, providing a bird’s-eye view over Great Victoria Street, has also been newly revitalised to incorporate new all-weather awnings, heaters and seating.

Fratelli shut its doors in March 2020, in line with the Executive’s directive on Covid-19 response measures. After the prolonged closure, its reopening marks a fresh start for the well-liked restaurant and confirms growing confidence in the city’s post-Covid recovery.

Lidl Northern Ireland clears the way for two new stores in Belfast and Omagh

02.03.2022

Construction work on two of Lidl Northern Ireland’s newest stores is under way in Belfast and Omagh as part of its multimillion-pound investment plans to transform older existing stores that reflect its bright, modern and award-winning ‘concept’ design.

Representing an investment of £8 million, the region’s fastest-growing retailer has just cleared the way and broken ground to relocate its existing store at the junction of Castlereagh and Montgomery Road in Belfast to a new adjacent site on Castlereagh Road. Approval for the new store was sought and granted by Belfast City Council last year.

Construction work at the expansive Castlereagh Road retail site, which is also home to a neighbouring Lynas Food outlet, is expected to last up to six months and will come with new and improved access created as part of the entire site’s ambitious transformation plans.

Occupying a much larger area of 11,575 sq. meters, with an impressive 1,420 sq. metre sales floor, the new east Belfast store will create a further 10 permanent new retail jobs who will join an existing team of 25 when it opens in Summer 2022. A further 200 jobs are also being created during the build-out and development phase.

Several new standalone commercial units are also earmarked for construction on the site by Heron Brothers, as part of a jointly approved planning application.

Part of a £32 million investment by Lidl Northern Ireland into developing five stores within the Greater Belfast region, the new Castlereagh store has been in planning since 2021, undergoing an extensive public and stakeholder consultation to bring local shoppers an improved customer experience, an expanded product range and modern facilities.

Lidl Northern Ireland has announced the extension of its charity partnership with NSPCC Northern Ireland for a third consecutive time, committing to a new fundraising target of over £1.1 million by 2024.

Established in 2017, the strategic partnership has delivered funding of more than £700,000 for NSPCC Northern Ireland through a range of activities and initiatives driven by Lidl Northern Ireland staff members across its 41 stores and supported locally by Lidl’s valued customers.
